When it comes to beating cancer, many survivors spend their time looking for advice related to improving their health once their treatment is finished. What they need to realize, though, is that taking care of their health is essential both during and after treatment. From nutrition to exercise, there is much advice to be taken to heart. Let’s take a look at common concerns you have may have as a cancer survivor. 

What you should know about alcohol

If you have beat cancer, you are probably wondering whether or not it is safe to consume alcohol. Truth is, the answer is no. Studies have been conducted that have found there is a link between cancer and alcohol. Some of the most common types of cancer that alcohol can increase the risk of developing include:

  • Mouth
  • Breast
  • Throat
  • Liver
  • Esophagus
  • Larynx

It is also important to understand that alcohol consumption can lead to increased estrogen in the blood. This means there is a greater risk of breast cancer returning after it has been treated. More so, you should know that some studies have shown alcohol consumption by cancer survivors who are overweight or obese causes them to be at a higher risk of their cancer returning.

Is food safety important during treatment?

Yes, food safety is of the utmost importance during cancer treatment because cancer survivors are at a higher risk of developing an infection. The treatment causes the immune system to be weakened, so special precautionary measures should be taken to decrease the chances of developing an infection. Food safety practices that should be followed include:

  • Keeping foods at the right temperatures
  • Cleaning all utensils properly 
  • Cooking foods to their proper temperatures
  • Washing hands before, during, and after preparing foods
  • Make sure all vegetables and fruits are well-washed
  • Avoid well water that may be contaminated with bacteria
  • Don’t eat sushi
  • Avoid raw honey and milk

Should you exercise during treatment?

Yes, you should do your best to exercise as much as possible when receiving treatment as well as after your treatment has been completed. Because of a weakened immune system, you may feel extremely tired during your treatment, but exercising will help increase your overall energy level. After treatment has ended, it is recommended to take part in weight training as this will help build back up your muscle mass. Exercising at least three times a week for 20 minutes a day is recommended.
